māṇḍŪkya upaniṣad: a 4-week immersion
The Māṇḍūkya Upaniṣad, the shortest of the most celebrated Upaniṣads deals with the subject of the syllable Oṃ as it relates to the states of consciousness, time, and Self (Ātman).
The importance of this Upaniṣad arises in another - the Muktikā Upaniṣad that is a conversation between Śrī Rāma and Hanumāna. When asked by Hanumāna about the means of attaining salvation, Śrī Rāma declares that the knowledge contained within the Māṇḍūkya Upaniṣad alone is enough. If unsuccessful, one can study the 10 principal Upaniṣads. If still unsuccessful, the student should study the 32 Upaniṣads. If this does not result in liberation, one should study the 108 Upaniṣads that may lead to liberation after death.
This text is the inspiration for the Māṇḍūkya Kārika, a key Vedāntic text authored by Śrī Gauḍapāda, the Parama Guru (Guru's Guru) of Śrī Ādi Śankarācārya.
